Okahumpka, Fla.--A rather unconventional cannon, dating from the Civil War era, has been unearthed by archeologists digging outside the town of Okahumpka in the Lake City area.
"What's unusual about this cannon is its shape," said Dr. T. Griffith Baggs, of Florida State University. Dr. Baggs is responsible for leading the team of student archeologists who first began investigating the area a year ago, after a local hog hunter found shards of what appeared to be Confederate shrapnel buried in the soft earth around his pig-hunting domain.
"The shape is very similar to that of a phallus, with testicles attached," Baggs went on to say. "We're wondering if this was significant in some way for the Confederates--perhaps a statement of manliness or power, designed to frighten the enemy."
